New sheets feel fresh and soft right out of the package, but to ensure comfort, durability, and safety, a first wash is essential. At Carré Blanc, we recommend following a few simple steps to preserve the quality of your bedding and unlock its full potential from the very first night.
Why wash new sheets?
Eliminate manufacturing and transportation residues
New bed linens may contain industrial residues, such as stain repellents, starch, formaldehyde or any other additives used in weaving, dyeing or industrial ironing. .
Soften the fibers and enhance the softness
The fibers, often stiff when they come out of the packaging, relax and soften with the first wash, revealing all the softness of the fabric — particularly noticeable on percale or cotton gauze .
Recommended methods for a successful first wash
1. Read the labels
Each fabric has its own specific characteristics. Always check the recommendations (temperature, type of washing, drying) before first use .
2. Sort by color
Separate whites, bright colors and dark shades to avoid color bleeding .
3. Soaking to fix the colors
For bright or dark shades, soaking for one to two hours (or overnight) in a basin of cold water with half a cup of white vinegar or a handful of coarse salt will help set the pigments and remove the primers .
4. Gentle machine wash
-
Use a delicate or short cycle program at a low temperature (30–40°C) to preserve the fibers and limit shrinkage .
-
Choose a gentle detergent , without bleaching agents or fabric softeners (the latter can clog the fibers) .
-
To neutralize stains and strains, some experts recommend adding one cup of baking soda to the wash cycle, and one cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle .
5. Hand wash (gentle option)
For very delicate textiles (silk, cotton satin), a gentle soak in lukewarm water with a little detergent or with a water/vinegar mixture allows gentle cleaning without damaging the fibers .
Drying: the crucial step
-
Air drying : This is the best option to maintain the suppleness and longevity of fabrics. Avoid direct sunlight, which can dull or stiffen the materials .
-
Tumble Dry : If necessary, use a delicate cycle at low temperature to avoid wrinkling and shrinking .
Recommended maintenance frequency
-
After this first wash, it is advisable to repeat the washing of the sheets every two weeks, or as soon as summer, perspiration or animals increase the hygiene needs. .
-
Pillowcases, which are more exposed to sebum and impurities, may require weekly washing. .
Washing new sheets for the first time is an essential part of caring for them: it frees the fabric from industrial treatments, softens the fibers, and sets the colors for a long time. By using a gentle cycle, using the right products, and drying them carefully, you can guarantee optimal comfort from the very first night.
