Commonly used in the manufacture of household linens, cotton percale is distinguished by its softness and great durability over time. Raw material, thread count, benefits and care: Carré reveals the secrets of this weaving method that gives our bed linen its high-end character.
What is cotton percale?
As its name suggests, cotton percale is made from the plant fibers of cotton, which grows primarily in the United States, India, China, and Brazil. The cotton is harvested in its raw state, then ginned and spun. It is then used to make household linens—bed linen, bath linen, and table linen.
Cotton percale differs from reinforced canvas and cotton sateen by its thread count, that is, the number of threads that make up the fabric's weave. Percale has a thread count of 80 threads/cm², making it a dense fabric with a soft, crisp feel, reserved for quality bedding. It is precisely this very tight weave that gives cotton percale its very durable properties.
What are the advantages of cotton percale?
Percale bedding has many benefits. Thanks to its absorbent properties, it helps regulate body temperature in both winter and summer. Cotton percale is therefore ideal for sleepers who sweat a lot. It's particularly suitable for even the most sensitive skin, thanks to its soft, silky feel that won't irritate the skin.
Easy to care for, cotton percale can be washed at 60°C and becomes more supple with each wash. Unlike some fabrics, percale retains its incomparable shape and vibrant colors over time. To care for your bed linen, consider ironing your percale sheets. This will enhance their matte appearance, which is different from that of satin, which is shinier, or linen, which is more wrinkled.
